Why Kiln-Dried Logs Burn Better in Your Wood Burning Stove

If you own a wood burning stove, the fuel you choose matters just as much as the stove itself. We see it time and again when our team visits homes for stove servicing and sweeping appointments: stoves burning damp or poorly seasoned wood are dirtier inside, less efficient, and far more likely to cause problems with the flue. Kiln-dried logs are widely regarded as the best fuel for wood burning stoves, and in this article we explain exactly why that is.

What Makes Kiln-Dried Logs Different?

Kiln-dried logs are timber that has been dried in a controlled, heated environment to reduce the moisture content to around 20% or below. That is significantly lower than freshly cut or green wood, which can hold moisture levels of 50% or more, and even lower than air-seasoned logs, which often sit between 25% and 35% depending on how long and where they have been stored.

That difference in moisture content has a direct impact on how the wood behaves when you burn it. Wood with high moisture content spends a lot of its energy evaporating water before it can actually combust properly. The result is a cooler, smokier, and far less efficient fire. Kiln-dried logs ignite more quickly, burn hotter, and produce far less smoke and residue as a result.

Moisture Content and the Law

Since May 2021, regulations in England have required that any bagged wood sold in volumes under 2 cubic metres must meet a moisture content of 20% or below. This is part of the Government's drive to improve air quality. If you are buying loose logs in larger quantities, it is always worth checking with your supplier and using a cheap moisture meter to test the wood yourself before burning it.

How Burning Wet Wood Harms Your Stove and Flue

Beyond the obvious inefficiency, burning wet or unseasoned wood causes real damage over time. When wood burns at a low temperature, it produces a thick smoke that is rich in tars, acids, and creosote. These substances rise up through the flue and deposit themselves on the inside of the liner or chimney walls.

Creosote build-up is one of the leading causes of chimney fires in the UK. It is highly flammable, and once it accumulates it is difficult to remove without a professional sweep. It can also corrode metal flue liners and damage mortar inside masonry chimneys. If you have a chimney liner installed, burning wet wood will shorten its lifespan considerably.

Kiln-dried logs burn at a much higher temperature, which means the combustion is cleaner and more complete. Less unburned material escapes up the flue, so tar and creosote deposits are kept to a minimum. Your stove glass stays clearer for longer, your flue stays cleaner, and you simply get more heat from every log you put in.

The Impact on Stove Efficiency

Modern wood burning stoves are rated for efficiency based on burning dry, well-prepared fuel. When you feed a high-efficiency stove with wet logs, you will never reach its rated output. You are essentially wasting fuel and money. Kiln-dried logs allow your stove to perform as it was designed to, giving you the heat output you paid for.

Practical Tips for Buying and Storing Kiln-Dried Logs

  • Buy from a reputable supplier who can confirm moisture content. Look for the Ready to Burn logo on bagged logs, which indicates the wood meets the 20% moisture threshold.
  • Store logs under cover even if they are already kiln-dried. Leaving them exposed to rain will raise the moisture content again over time.
  • Allow airflow around stored logs rather than sealing them in plastic sheeting. A log store with a roof but open sides is ideal.
  • Use a moisture meter if you are unsure. They are inexpensive and give you a reading within seconds.
  • Avoid burning treated, painted, or composite wood. These release harmful substances when burned and are not suitable for use in any stove.

Getting the Most From Your Stove

Good fuel is only part of the picture. A clean, well-maintained stove and a properly lined flue are just as important for safe and efficient burning.
